The road is rather steep and bumpy in parts but is passable by non-four-wheel-drive vehicles in dry weather. It can be toured via a 17-mile gravel road (San Juan County Road 242) that winds around the rock formations. Unlike Monument Valley, which is operated by the Navajo Nation, Valley of the Gods remains wild and remote and isn't crowded. Admission is free and visitors can camp, picnic, drive, hike and bike at their leisure.

Today, it remains protected public land administered by the Bureau of Land Management. In 2017, a proclamation by President Donald Trump excluded Valley of the Gods from the Bears Ears National Monument. Once part of Bears Ears National Monument, it is located north of Monument Valley across the San Juan River and features rock formations similar to those in Monument Valley with tall, reddish brown mesas, buttes, towers and mushroom rocks, remnants of an ancient landscape.

It is a scenic sandstone valley near Mexican Hat in southeastern Utah. But if you plan to visit Monument Valley, a side trip to Valley of the Gods is worth your time and effort. Valley of the Gods isn't as spectacular or as majestic or as awe-inspiring as nearby Monument Valley.
